To prospective guests of Casabuena,
We operate Casabuena with a fairly simple set of goals.
Namely to provide a secure, comfortable, friendly, and affordable accommodation for travelers.
We have traveled extensively in North and Central America and the Carribean and found the things we liked most and least in lodgings. We have sought to balance these factors into what is now Casabuena.
Such as:
-Clean rooms with comfortable beds... All of our rooms have orthopedic mattresses with the exception of our ‘floating beds that use foam mattresses’, used when additional beds are needed. We do not use carpeted floors as they are never clean, preferring tile and mopping with disinfectant cleaners. Rooms are cleaned daily and linens replaced at your discretion except Sundays when we give our staff a day off.
-Hot showers with good pressure… Gravity feed rooftop systems with a solar heated tank are inexpensive to setup and operate but I have never enjoyed lukewarm dribble showers. We use an underground cistern (cleaned anually) to store water and a pressure pump to deliver it at 40-70psi to our rooms using electric water heaters…expensive but worth it.
-Flexible hours…Rather than constrain our guests to a hot breakfast schedule we put out cereals, milk, coffee, teas, fruits, and usually fresh baked breadstuffs. Eggs are available if you want to make yourself egg dishes. Available from 7 AM until. You are welcome to use the kitchen or grill but we rely on guests to cleanup after themselves after noon. We can receive guests anytime 24/7 given notice in advance (except when we are in church Sundays 8:45 –11am).
- Kid and Pet Friendliness… if you don’t like kids and pets you probably won’t like us. If you bring your pets they need to be friendly (no chasing/eating of kids or cats) or on a short leash and controlled/secured for our cleaning lady to access your room. We charge a small pet fee and you need to clean up after your pets and recognize your liability for any damage they cause.
- Pricing…Humm…In our travels we hated being nickled and dimed for every little thing. So:
-we provide purified drinking water 5 gallon dispensers and purified ice …bring your own bottle
-we do not do Egyptian cotton sheets or down comforters (yet) instead we top out our pricing at $52-$63 per night (16% tax included)
-most of our guests are repeat customers who know great value when they see it.
-no valet service but free secure parking
-free WiFi access
-no overpriced snacks or sodas…just cross the street and buy in the small tienda
- We have a phone service that includes unlimited free calling worldwide.
-laundry service is available across the street
-Privacy/Security…As a gated property with little street exposure we lose a lot of commerce by not encouraging local and walk-in traffic. We depend more on web promotion and word-of-mouth advertising.
As Casabuena is our home the trade off of income for privacy and security is worthwhile. As such we are not the best choice for the wild party/spring break crowd.
We do not allow smoking in our rooms or other interior spaces. If you do smoke outside please don’t drop butts on the ground or in planters.
Feel free to enjoy cocktails when and where you like but please be proper and considerate of others.
-Location/Aesthetics…we are located one block off the main drag 7 blocks (10 minutes walking) from the start of the waterfront (Malecon). As we don’t have an ocean view or beach we create out own views with our gardens and central palapa building. We occupy 2700 meters (2/3 of an acre) of land and have a 25,000 gallon pool. You will not find this with other properties costing $$$s more in La Paz. A quiet reality of La Paz is that being on a bay inside a bay inside the Sea of Cortez there are no naturally occurring beaches. Though clean enough and not objectionable for a stroll I would not recommend swimming off the downtown beaches.
The waterfront is beautifully tiled for 3 miles along the waterfront. Balandra and Tecolote have beautiful beaches north of town about a 40 minute drive or bus ride. We are an excellent jumping off point for fishing trips, diving, or island tours.
